Les Misérables Philadelphia!

One of the longest running musicals in the world, Les Misérables comes to Philadelphia. Having won numerous accolades and bagging all major theatre awards including a Tony, Grammy, and Oliver, this musical is one of the most famous in the world and certainly the most popular French musical.  It has been enacted in 21 languages and in more than 43 countries. It has gathered a cult following from an audience of over 60 million after giving almost 50,000 performances. The play is presently on its 25th anniversary edition tour.

ABOUT THE PLAY:

The story depicts the sufferings of the working class during the times of the French Revolution. Set in the backdrop of 19th century France, this play is based on the classic written by Victor Hugo in the year 1862. The book was an instant hit with the masses! The title literally translates to “The Miserables” and it mirrors the life of the poor during the 19th century in France. They had to cope with harsh living conditions and unfair discriminations as well. It was truly a survival of the fittest for them. The stories are told over a period of 3 decades and you will be moved with the brilliant performances!

Les Misérables opened at the Barbican Theatre in the year 1985, in the month of October. However, the Queen’s Theatre was thought to be a more suitable venue and it was shifted there in the year 2004. The team behind the musical is Alain Boubil, who wrote the script, Claude Michel, who gave the music, Herbert Kretzmer who wrote the lyrics, and last but not the least, Trevor Nunn who is the director.
